Prescribing Changes from 01 May 2017
2016.09.23 ECS-FMC Proposed Merger Ltr.doc
Our nursing team carries out a very wide range of activities including: Health checks, Blood pressure checks, Blood-taking, ECGs, Heart risk assessments, lung function tests, holiday & other vaccinations, family planning, smear tests and regular checks for those patients with chronic (long-term) conditions. As you would perhaps expect, different members of the Team are trained in different skills and procedures – our receptionists will help you to make sure that your appointment is booked with an appropriate member of staff.
We can advise you on all matters related to your health. We offer advice on healthier eating, losing weight, alcohol intake, stopping smoking and any other matter which will help you to achieve or to maintain a healthier lifestyle. If they are needed we will arrange blood pressure checks, vaccinations and blood & urine testing.
In order to ensure that we know about all of your health circumstances and so that we can take some simple base-line measurements, we invite all of our new patients aged 12 and over to attend for a basic health-screening check with one of our nursing staff. This may include a basic lung-function test for smokers and former smokers aged 40 or over.
Patients aged between 16 & 75 years who have not seen a doctor during the last 3 years are entitled to book a routine check, patients over 75 years of age are entitled to a check if they have not seen a doctor during the previous year.
‘Flu vaccinations are available to patient groups as defined each year by the Department of Health. At present these groups include: Patients aged 65 and over, those suffering from various long-term conditions, asthmatics who are using inhaled corticosteroids, those whose immune systems are compromised, residents of care or nursing homes, ladies who are pregnant and anyone who is registered as a Carer. We regret that, unless you fall into one or more of the defined categories, for licensing reasons we are unable to vaccinate you. Some local pharmacies and private travel centres offer (chargeable) vaccinations.
We provide a very broad spectrum of family planning advice and services including ‘the pill’, barrier methods, coils, contraceptive injection, implants & emergency contraception. Please ask our receptionists to make an appointment for you with one of the Practice nurses.
We are happy to deal with any concerns that you may have regarding your contraceptive method, even if it was started at your previous GP's surgery, the Family Planning Clinic or elsewhere.
Our nurses carry out the routine monitoring of all of our patients suffering with long-term conditions. These checks are important so that our doctors become aware at the earliest opportunity of any changes to your health. Please help us to keep you as well as possible by attending monitoring appointments, or by rearranging them, when we call for you.
The Practice runs regular clinics and offers and arranges other appointments covering a wide range of health topics such as:
Well woman / Cytology / HRT, Antenatal, Diabetic, Coronary Heart Disease, Lung Disease, Quit smoking, Minor surgery, Joint injections, Cryotherapy, Accupuncture, Well baby checks & Immunisations, Alcohol & Substance misuse and Counselling.
Our receptionists will advise you of dates and times at your usual surgery or of how to get in touch with the various services which support our own work.
Various minor surgical procedures are carried out at our purpose-built operating rooms located at the Pinfold Lane & Elizabeth Court Surgeries. Liquid nitrogen is used at our Pinfold Surgery to treat warts, veruccas and some other skin problems.
Your doctor will be happy to discuss your requirements.
District Nurses work in the community and see patients at the Surgeries, in their own homes and in residential accommodation.
They are experts at providing nursing care in the community, teaching self-care to patients and to their carers, promoting quality of life and maximising independence.
Health Visitors see their patients either at the Surgeries or at their own homes. They deal with patients up to 19 years of age, but their work is focussed primarily on children under the age of 5 years. Health Visitors have a wide range of experience in, and knowledge of, the care of children, the family and community health. Their Office telephone number is: 01977 465764
Midwives work alongside the Practice team of clinicians. They hold regular clinics at all of our surgeries and look after expectant mums throughout their pregnancies. If you think that you may be pregnant there is no need to see a doctor (unless you think that there may be a medical problem) - instead our reception staff will arrange for you see, or to make contact with, the midwives according to your needs.
If your doctor needs to refer you to a hospital for further examination or treatment then the Practice uses the NHS “Choose & Book” system which enables you to be seen at any hospital of your choice offering that service. Your doctor will discuss with you the available options.
Please note that, if you are entitled to NHS transport, then this usually would be only to the closest hospital offering the service which you require. This does not mean that you cannot be seen at a different hospital of your choice, it means simply that you may have to make your own arrangements for travel.
Our doctors offer a variety of ‘non-NHS’ services such as employment, driving & insurance medicals, insurance forms and solicitor requests. Fees apply for all of these services - for our current rates please ask one of our receptionists. If you require the completion of a form (or another non-NHS service) then please request this through our receptionists rather than by booking an appointment with your doctor, otherwise you could be charged for a private consultation in addition to the relevant fee for the form.
Please note that the doctors place a much higher priority on their NHS commitments than they do on ‘private work’ so you could well find that waiting times are considerably longer if you request non-NHS services. As a guide, we aim to complete most 'private forms' within 40 working days from the receipt of payment. If there are genuine reasons for your request to be completed quicker than that then please bring this to the attention of a receptionist when you make your request. We will try to oblige but unfortunately cannot make any guarantees because our main purpose is to provide NHS services.
Please see our Foreign Travel section for detailed information on vaccinations.
Our Practice nurses are trained to give advice regarding those vaccinations required & advised for overseas travel. To save your time and a possible unnecessary trip to the surgery, please contact our receptionists who will give you a form to complete with your travel plans and other relevant details. The nurse will review the information you give and will make any relevant recommendations. We invite you to contact us 5 or more working days later for that advice and to arrange any necessary appointment.
Please note that some vaccinations are not available through the NHS and so you may be obliged to pay a fee. If this is the case then we will advise you of any charges before you book your appointment – we will not charge you for our advice.
Our Pinfold Lane Surgery in Methley is registered as a yellow fever vaccination centre and we can perform vaccinations on our own patients and those of other Surgeries. There is a charge for yellow fever vaccinations, please ask our receptionists for current prices.
